cutting hairAs anyone who has gone to a salon knows, the piles of cut hair on the floor are almost never put to use; they are merely swept up, thrown out, and forgotten about. However, a charity called Matter of Trust has found a solution to both this waste and the recent oil spill off the coast of Louisiana, which, according to the New York Daily News, has spilled 1.6 million gallons of oil into the Gulf Coast. One of the projects sponsored by Matter of Trust is creating “booms” (essentially, pantyhose stuffed with discarded hair), which successfully soak up oil. As reported by USA Today, the co-founder of Matter of Trust, Lisa Craig Gautier, says that “these simple booms have been highly effective and efficient at cleaning up oil,” low-tech as they may be.

Strut Your Cut will make a $1 donation to Matter of Trust for each haircut from May 12th through June 30th. They will also be collecting washed, used (even with runs) nylon stockings and tights for this program. Helping out and doing your part is as simple as coming in for a cut, or going to MatterofTrust.org to find out more information about the project.
